Sometimes you shoot just for the light

If photography was all about painting with light then light should have a really high place in our choice of shots. It's easy to be disappointed on cloudy, misty morning especially if your predominant style is well lit portraits. And yet, these situations come with their own beautiful quality of light. The mist and clouds diffuse the harsh sun and give you decent shooting conditions all day. The moist weather conditions give a dew laden feel to the foliage, creating a sense of freshness in your images. And if it stays reasonably warm and humid, animal activity is likely to stay strong all day. All you need to pray for is that it doesn't get too cold, eh?

That morning at Lake Nakuru was one such occasion. We had a choice to move away from the lake and try finding some lions on the high ground. Ironically, our eyes lit up when we saw the mist laden lake area in the distance. So lions were off the agenda for a while and we slowly approached the lake. It was quite a magical morning as we made several images - silhouettes against the mist, dreamy naturescapes and some interesting behaviour shots like this one - Thomson's Gazelles sparring in the presence of a peaceful onlooker. I'll probably share the remaining images with you in a separate article on another day.
